I have some external single drive USB2.0/firewire hard disc enclosures (in
addition to the big 8 bay cases) and I get about 14Mbytes/sec from them.

You wouldn't want to run heavy database applications from them but I find
them quick enough for most things - certainly when used across a network
then they don't display any kind of speed penalty over being hooked up
direct to an IDE port. Currently *ALL* my network storage is firewire /
USB2
attached drives.
