Ouch. This area is nasty.

It would be quite easy to set up ethereal [1], in particular the text
mode 'tethereal' included in the standard downloads, with a capture
filter which captures Yahoo traffic and nothing else and dumps it to a
file. These could be played back later with the GUI version of the
program. Ethereal includes a protocol dissector for Yahoo's Instant
Messenger [and just about every other protocol under the sun].

Ethereal is free, GPL licensed software.

I don't know anything about legality of this sort of stuff. Somebody
will want to check!
