Re[2]: [OT] PC Serial numbering

At one company, we used the Asset tag number for the C drive volume label,
the netbios name/hostname and as an override for the MAC address (token
ring network) so that the computer was easily identified at several
levels.(I've just set my ethernet adaptor to 400000000180 which worked
fine). Changing the adaptor then didn't matter.

The trick was to run a script after ghosting the image to personalise the
computer. For existing computers we retrofitted by popping up a prompt
during logon to ask for the user's name department, asset tag info, etc.,
which personalised the compuiter and was also collected by the asset
management software..
