The CM12U plugs into a serial port.

The XM10U requires control at TTL level, for instance by custom hardware.

Think of the CM10U as vaguely equivalent to an XM10U and a TTL to
serial controller circuit in the same box.

In terms of which you need:

- If you're going to plug into a PC, you need a CM
- If you're going to plug into an embedded TTL controller/slave like
HomeVision or an X10 relay board, you need an XM
