I've been pondering the same sort of problem

ideas I'm mulling (but haven't implemented yet) are:

*) obviously a PIR being triggered should be enough to turn the light
on
*) I'm thinking of putting pressure pads under the carpet infront of
the settee and pressure on them would keep the light on but not
necessarily turn it on.
*) alternative or additional to pressure pads would be ir-beam across
the seats of the settee. pro's and con's to this, but wouldn't work
where we have a settee at right angles to a window !!

I'm liking the idea of the pressure pads though as it has the side
effect that if you lie down on the settee, the lights turn off -
cool :)

I think you'd also want someway to force on - similar to the 'boost'
on central heating. ie be able to say force on for 2 hours, but that
shouldn't be the default - maybe do this by pressing a momentary
switch once for each hour to force on.
