'just wondered if anyone is using Applescript to run an RS232
interface to send & receive ASCII strings ... ?
many years ago, under OS6.5, I used MS QuickBasic to write a GUI
application to point & click our hi-fi (*), but it was 16bit and then
OS7.5 was 32bit, and during a clean-up I deleted my application,
without a back-up ... it happens ... grrrh !
now, as a simple project to learn the ropes, I'm looking to do it
again under OS10.4, which means getting into Applescript ... only, so-
far, I see no sign of RS232 !
it might be, of course, that if I bought the right adapter (USB-
RS232 / Firewire-RS232 / Ethernet-RS232 / IrDA-RS232, USB-Bluetooth-
Bluetooth-RS232, if such things exist) it would come with some
suitable scripts ...
maybe there's an easier way ? !

* the hi-fi controller unit accepts both IR & RS232 inputs, so to
make it more novice-friendly I linked it to our IIfx & ran it from an
application, which expanded the options with more time-clock events &
extra functions, and made programming it to record things more
straight-forward, the normal menu-driven IR remote / one-line LCD
display route being more than a little tedious ...
