Mine does the same. I have just checked it after being left in my bag
for a week and it started up with the Apple logo, half of the battery
life was still there though, so I guess it is some sort of way to
preserve the battery to the max when not in use.

I don't use it for anything other than music, i bought it because it
was the most usable MP3 player the most capacity that wasnt the size
of a brick, so was never really interested in the photo part. I did
once try and sync my contacts to it but it went ape and i gave up.
