services as far as I can see.

Yes indeed - if you are looking for some inspiration, have a look at
either
John Bent or Tom Van den Panhuyzen's apps which are open sourced xPL
service
apps written in .Net

There's actually a couple of "howto" articles about creating
windows
service
based xpl apps on the site too.
