I started something similar some significant time ago. Yet another
unfinished project...

In preference to 3.5mm jack plugs, I'm using iButtons. There is a keyfob
that you can snap them into and they have a good positive locking action
when plugged into one of the latching receptacles. With the number of keys
I
tend to carry around, I'd be worried about jack plugs pulling out. Plus,
with the extra functionality available with the various iButtons, you could
perhaps do some more interesting things with them later on.
