Without entering into this DRM debate...

The correct, easiest, most reliable (and, in fact, Apple prescribed)
way of dealing with this is to use iTunes to burn the tracks to an
audio CD - and then import that CD into iTunes as whatever format you
like (MP3, AAC....).

The imported files will have no DRM on them.

Yes, folks will say the newly imported copy will be of lesser quality -
but I can't say I've noticed.

At the end of the day Apple had to implement *some kind* of DRM to get
the record labels onboard with the iTunes Store. However, they've been
fairly public about how it can be easily gotten around as I've
described above.
