RE: [OT] iTunes DRM

The whole issue of DRM is a complete mess.

Paul has quite correctly PAID for the right to hold a copy of a tune and to
listen to it yet is being inconvienienced by DRM.

People who have no intention of paying for music can still easily obtain
whatever song they like and listen to it on whatever hardware they have
available.

Likewise the "modifed" CD format that some record companies
brought out that
prevented people playing CD's in their PC and some Car CD players, again
legitimate purchasers of music were inconvienienced.

By stark contrast, anyone wishing to engage in illegal distribution of
music
either by download or flogging bootleg CD's at the Sunday market could play
that CD in an ordinary CD player and record the analogue output into their
PC then churn out pirate CD's to their hearts content. The pirate copy
would
then be inferior but who would know until they got home and played it.

I personally shall stick to ripping my own CD's and when I get round to it,
my vinyl collection for a number of reasons....

1. I want to be able to play my songs on any player I choose
2. I already own 95% of the music I like
3. The stuff I like but havent got is unlikely to be available for download
as much of it predates the digital era and at the moment record companies
arent transfering Analogue Master Tapes of obscure songs into digital
format
:-(

Its just another case of those playing by the rules being shafted and those
who dont give a stuff getting away with it :-(
