George

As Tim said, you'd be better posting this question on the selfbuild forum;
it's been at least 2 months since we had the TF vs. traditional debate, so
it'll be good to run through it again ;-)

Seriously though, I had the same dilemma (having ruled out 'traditional'
build early on); I got pricing from about 8 companies (some TF, a couple of
SIP), did my best to compare them, and eventually decided on TF. The SIP
pricing seemed to work out around 25% higher, which in theory you might be
able to claw back as it simplifies the build and reduces time. In reality
finding contractors familiar with SIPs is not easy (it's hard enough with
TF!), so in the end a combination of cost and contractor reluctance put me
off. Not sure what you mean by 'German variation' of TF, but if you mean
Huf, then it ain't cheap!

I'd happily recommend my TF company (it's due to go up on 9 May).

Where in the country are you?

Pete

Hello All,

Joined group last night after returning from NEC - complete novice re: HA,
so certainly looking forward to learning from you all.

I'm about embarking on a self-build, which is what actually took me to NEC.
Was thinking of going down standard timber frame route, but based on
findings at NEC, think might go down SIPS or some other German variation of
TF. Has anyone been involved in a self-build project? I need some guidance
please, as I'm currently suffering from information overload & need
advise
re: reliable TF companies, builders, etc.. Aim is to spend as little as
possible to get quality work done.. Of course I'm totally sold on HA, so
hoping to implement as much HA as I can afford in the build..

Take care & look forward to meeting as many of you as I can!!!

George
