Stephen

I would second that recommendation of a Canon.

surprised if it fits the bill! What do you want to use it for? You need
to
decide this to determine what choices you make. You also need to decide
your budget, and what quality you're after. Normally, you will have to
compromise.

most
important if you wish to get prints. To give a good example, my 6MP camera
is indistinguishable from 35mm film at 18"x12". The most
important thing to
get your head round is that just because it says "6 Megapixels"on
the side,
it doesn't mean that you'll get an amazing image. If the camera is unable
to meter correctly or has poor optics, you'll get 6 million pixels that
don't correlate with what you took a picture of. Personally, I'd stick to
the more well known makes such as Fuji (my personal favourite for non-pro
cameras), Canon, Nikon. You can't really go wrong with one of those as far
as picture quality goes. Just make sure it has the features you want, and
fits your budget.
