An appliance module just has ON and OFF, whilst a lamp module lets you dim
it.

However, the plug in lamp modules always come on at 100%, if you dim
them down 10 0% they still take 25% of the power they do at 100%
brightness. so you can't simply dim them to 0% to simulate ramping up
from off.

I think the appliance modules are also rated for bigger loads, and
they make a big noisey CLICK when you switch them on.
