Ok,

That sounds good..  So the software on the PC would be able to conltrol the
lamps etc..?

I am also keen to get some sort of IR reciver/controller to control the
lights etc.  Can this be easily added into the kit?

Yeah, you just plug them into the wall socket, then plug the
appliance/lamp into the module. The kit used to come with some crappy
control software for the PC too, it's good to get you going.
