best usb card or port?

Hi,

I had a Belkin 7-port usb hub of which only 4 ports now work. I don't
know what killed the other three but belkin don't want to reply to my
emails ;(

So I'm guessing I'll have to buy a new one. I may as well upgrade to
usb2 although I don't have any usb2 hardware (yet).

What is better an external hub or a pci card?

Which makes/models do you recommend or avoid?
