RE: [OT] Plasma/DLP
That's where you need to trial the screen. Some people like the look of
the
higher-res screens (and it is the ethos of the list to go for the best!),
but my Panny series 5 screen isn't very high (can't remember what), and I
have absolutely no concerns with the clarity/sharpness of the picture.
That
might be different if I was feeding a PC through it, which I don't do. You
could do worse than ask for opinions on the relevant forum on the DVD
forums
site, but you will just get a heap of conflicting comments, simply because
it is soooo subjective. FWIW, I'm still convinced that the 'cheap' brands
(LG, Samsung, Realsys etc) do not produce a picture that is as natural and
defined as a Panny or Pioneer, but without going into a 1000 words, it
would
be difficult to say why; it's just a gut feel thing.
If low profile is a requirement, then obviously plasma is better than even
the shallowest RP. RP's have gotten much better lately, and much cheaper
(they're still the default choice in the US), but they're rapidly losing
ground to the plasmas and LCDs.
FWIW, my Panny is now in storage for a year whilst I build the new house,
so
I'm open to offers, but I really don't know what to ask for it. Off list of
you (or anyone) is interested.

Thanks for the input. Low profile is the key requirement but cabling will
be well hidden with the equipment in a cabinet below. I would prefer a
separate tuner box but, as with other requirements, this is not a deal
breaker.
I have noticed a wide selection of resolutions. "In the real
world" am I
better with a higher resolution device (1024x1024 or 1200+ x 700+) or will
these cause a normal picture to look a bit pants?

Is being 'low profile' one of your requirements, or the ability to view
from
all angles? If they are, then I would say it would have to be plasma
(though some of the RP's are very good these days). Panasonic &
Pioneer
generally get the best reports, though it's very subjective. You're looking
for a lot of connects there; you'd certainly need an off-board tuner or
scaler, unless you have the facility to hide all the wires running to the
plasma. At least you don't need SCART, which is of course the most evil
designed-by-committee lead to ever exist.
Personally I'd recommend Richer Sounds as a supplier (that includes the
extended warranty), but you might want to demo the screen somewhere else.
