The MAC filter is a far more effective security feature than WEP.  WEP is
easily cracked with software freely available on the 'net using any
wireless card in a laptop.  Spoofing a MAC address is a much harder nut to
crack.  If you want security on a wireless network, treat it as you would
the Internet.  This means VPN into your wired network, and/or use
publically safe services on the network.  My setup is completely 100% open
(by design), but looking at the logs, nobody ever actually connects. 
That's in a busy suburb in Bristol.
