OK, good news & bad news then.

Not ideally, no, although at the moment it's more of a temporary
arrangement than a permanent solution so may just do the job. Does the
non-broadcast of the SSID actually work with the 1.1. firmware ? (ISTR
it just crashed the WAP11 with the older firmware)
The MAC filter table would also provide some security in lieu of
disabling WEP, if that too actually works though.

A nice way around the problem, although not cheap. Particularly when
bridge mode *should* be supported anyway :-(
