DMX RGB lighting

Gentlemen,

I've been looking (again) at the iCove colour stuff . however I think
they're a bit on the expensive side (they might not be, but im skint
with crimbo fast approaching)

Anyhoo.  I noticed on my newly acquired xbox chip that it has a small
rbg led on the front. How difficult would it be to have a few of them
(say 20) on a small board and have them controlled by something like dmx
?

Just a bit of colour changing and cycling ..

What are your thoughts? Or should I stop being so cheap and buy a
'proper' product ?
