x-box for beginners

Afternoon all,

OK, I'm going to buy an x-box. The main reason for this is to stream from
Tivo, although I'd probably play DVD's and games on it from time to time,
and not interested in LIVE at all.

I know Steve was writing a soft mod tutorial (how's that going Steve?), and
I've looked at Ian's site, but I'm looking for the easiest way to make the
above happen.

Ideally I don't want to have to open the unit up, although I will if its
unavoidable, and I'd like to be able to do this without having to
"know
someone, who knows someone, that has a game save" etc.

Am I asking too much??? ;-)

Also, do I have to worry about taking the virgin unit out of the box, and
using it before modding? (i.e. does it get updated or anything a'la Tivo)

Cheers for any advice.

Stuart
