Optical audio connections

I currently use an all-in-one home cinema dvd player, and was toying with
the idea of streaming video to it from a PC, but retaining the surround
sound (goodbye MediaMVP!). However, I'm a bit confused about the optical
digital audio input. The specification in the manual says this:

Digital input
DIGITAL IN (STB): -21 dBm to -15 dBm (660 nm ±30 nm)
* Corresponding to Linear PCM, Dolby Digital, and
DTS Digital Surround (with sampling frequency - 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz)

But the PC sounds cards I have seen talk about SPDIF for optical output -
is
this just a different name for the same thing? If not, is there any way to
get multichannel audio out from a PC in the correct format?

Mal
