It's also going to be used as a DVD player in our bedroom, so I'll be
doing that after I get the modchip working!

You can use it as normal (ignoring the dvd functions) if you
chip/softmod the xbox. A replacement dvd drive would also be a suitable
option.

If you don't need to use Xbox Live, don't bother with a modchip, just
softmod.
