[OT] outlook attachments - ATTxxxx.dat

Sorry for the OT post but I thought someone might be able to help !

we've an old laptop here that's never been blessed with runnin email
etc.....

any way another machine has gone down and so put it on the network and set
up email.

sometimes when sending emails the attachements arrive encoded as
ATTxxxx.DAT
files ?

Any ideas ?   I've searhced the web and more or less everthing I've found
suggests just sending as Plain Text - but that will mean not being able to
embed images etc .....   - won't it ?
