Distributed computing is good. It also provides the opportunity to
run a hybrid of operating systems, which (without wanting to start an
OS flame fest) gives a greater choice in terms of software solutions.
It also nicely side steps the single-point-of-failure "the house has
crashed" scenario.

As for the 1U noise problem - Cubid / BookPC form factor works as a
good compromise for me. It's not as sexy as rackmount kit, but you
can get a couple on a shelf (more if you are prepared to stack them),
they're not too noisy either, and seem to dissipate heat
effectively/reliably.
