I had this problem too.  In the end I found that a 80Gb HDD and a
Firewire/USB2 enclosure makes a pretty good & portable backup device. 
I use
File SyncForce ($35 us) which maintains an automatic mirror of selected
directories at periods set by you.  I found it irritating backing up 10Gbs
of data when I had simply added a few files to the directory.  Another
advantage is that there is no need to "restore" as the directory
structures
remain.

The device can be removed and put in a safe etc. for periods of absence and
is ideal for taking on visits to like minded individuals to be filled up
with audio/video/software goodies.  : )
