Gents,

If anyone needs accessories for Compaq servers, eg CPU's, discs, memory,
raid cards, cables, switch boxes I can help for a limited time.

Matt,

Compaq Smart Start ( I use ver 4.2) is needed to configure the hardware.
I'm no expert but it is pretty straight forward to use. Boot the machine
with the CD in the drive. Simple windows type interface. Allows you to
configure disk sizes and which RAID option, I went with RAID5 for
greatest resilience.

The 6500 has hot swap PCI card slots but have never managed to get my
head round that. The PCI Cards need to support Hot Swap to be able to
use this feature. I've installed a modem and an 8 port serial card in
these slots without too much trouble. Although the Serial card did
default to Comms 11 to 18 which is a bit of an issue with Homeseer...

A KVM has proved invaluable for the various machines, although its
frustrating to pay the same for a KVM as a Server !!!

The other thing is label the cables in the rack, they soon mount up and
even when you installed them all you forget which is which.

Good luck

Nigel

Hi Nigel!

Your rack was my inspiration!!!! Other than buying the basic unit
what else do I need to get things up and running? Any special
software (I believe I have a copy of foundationpack 4.20 somwehere -
is this of ANY use?)?

Really eager to get this started as racking my stuff would make my
life MUCH easier than random bits everywhere. The paln is the room
will be only for node-0 so no problems with noise etc.

Matt

P.S
As mentioned before i'm leaving for Disneylan Paris at 10pm tonight
so won't be able to get online til Monday.

TIA
