RE: Where to put surround sound speakers...

Why would I laugh, you should see some of the stuff I've got at home!

It's fine for me to recommend timbre matched speakers from the same
range but, like Mark, many people put together systems over a period of
time which often necessitates using speakers from different series. This
is of course the next best thing, as Mark says even if the drivers
aren't identical they will tend to have a 'family sound' and so putting
2 B&Ws together from different series is likely to give significantly
better results than another brand of speaker.

Whilst it's not appropriate for me to recommend speakers here KEF is an
example of another British speaker manufacturer (not that many speakers
are actually manufactured in this country anymore of course) who make
in-ceilings - including dipoles - which at least use the same drivers as
their more conventional speakers. In fact most speaker manufacturers now
pay more than passing attention to the in-wall/in-ceiling market as -
unlike with their traditional 2 channel products and along with home
cinema ranges - sales of these models are on the increase rather than
rapid decline.

B&W

B&W now have a wide "custom installation" range that go all
the way up
>from
wall-mount baffle at three-and-a-half-grand a pair.

Personally, I use B&W speakers front, rear, and sub, but not the
in-wall/in-ceiling ones.

Nik will probably laugh at the exact mix, since it's built up over the
years:

- Front: CDM7s
- Rear: 602.3s
- Sub: The 8 series old one (square, not rounded, forget the model
number.)

There you go, speakers from the 6, 7, and 8 ranges all in one system.
Not as well matched as an all-8-series would be, but does show that the
"family sound" is strong.

Oh - and I also like B&W because they're a British company, and I kind
of like buying British :-)
