RE: Okay I give up
Thanks Doogie,
I have in the long past "done" VB programming, actually enjoyed
it! only basic stuff, click this button - adds that to this box - clears
that box - moves focus to the other box.... you get the picture.
I think I will uninstall all the gallery and Apache stuff and re-try IIS. I
did have IIS working for quite a while but then it stopped, probably
something I did, and I can not get it to work again....
I have built about 5 W2K Server boxes and IIS worked on all of them so why
it has now stopped is beyond me! trouble is the server has got so complex
with HA related kit I am very loathe to re-build it again.
As for your link, I was following that at one time till I lost it and
forgot about it as I had other procedures to follow. Might try that
again... and then uninstall it!
php.ini is definitely not on my server box or on my workstation, used mark1
eyeball and search to try and locate it...
Thanks for your prompt reply, maybe I will not kill myself just yet!
B.

from.. is this Linux stuff?
Nope, that's def windows stuff but I've only used gallery on my
rapidhoster linux account so not sure about that file. Try
C:\Windows\php.ini or %windir%\php.ini
> Obviously installing this type of software assumes you know something
about what ever this software is? somewhere I read something about
downloading a file and chmod(?) it, what is that?
chmod is a linux thing, hence your confusion! Chmod is all about setting
the file securities on who has access to what - I assume in Apache under
windows this is handled by the standard windows security management
interface (right click, properties, security etc)
> The only reason for learning Apache is I can not get IIS to work! I
have absolutely no one to help me with this type of stuff and do not even
know what book I could read to learn it.
I'm afraid I've always found IIS pretty easy to run with out of the box
- it's a lot more locked down if you're running 2k3 server but still
pretty straightforward. If you want to get IIS up and running I'm sure
there's some guides on Microsoft's website - it is in their best
interest after all ;-> A quick google found me this about installing
Apache under windows, but no mention of PHP in it... I'm not sure if
that's something that you add after installing Apache or what.
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/windows.html
> I bought a book entitled "Teach yourself ASP.NET" then
someone said ASP and ASP.NET are 2 separate things so have not opened
it....
ASP.Net allows you to write dynamic web pages with Visual Studio .Net in
one of the languages there - the most popular being Visual Basic .Net
and C# (C sharp). Classic ASP allows you to write dynamic web pages in
VBScript.
ASP.Net is much more powerful and flexible, especially if you know a
language such as VB as you don't have to remember the silly subset of VB
that VBScript is.
If you want to run ASP or ASP.Net stuff you'd probably be better
sticking with IIS - I know there are things like Chillisoft ASP for
Apache, but that could just be adding another layer of complexity for
things to go wrong in ;->
> Maybe I should just give up and admit defeat? am I the only one that
finds this sooooo frustrating?
LOL.... don't give up! Like I say, MS probably has some guides on
installing IIS. Personally I've only ever used IIS on windows and Apache
on Linux, but if you have any specific questions about IIS (I'm more
familiar with that from an admin side than I am with Apache) feel free
to drop me a line off list and I'll try my best to help.
Cheers
