as u suspected there are retaining clips inside. Once the one screw is out
they are just very stiff.  What I did was carefully slide a flat
screwdriver
under the grey bottom piece where the screw came out of an gently lever it
until the first clips popped. Once you've the first two released the rest
opens up fairly easily.  Very fiddly to put back together though!  :-)

Bad news... My 2.5 year old has "done" something to my tivo
remote
involving
a pram.  The tivo button is now very stiff and doesn't always work.  It's
not as if she was even trying to watch anything ;-)

Anyone know of a guide on opening up one of these remotes ? I've had a go
removing the screw in the battery bay but there still appears to be a
number
of internal clips, or something, holding it together
