Absolutley
I have only ever "lost" on one auction, for exactly these reasons

I was too mean. Work out what you are prepared to pay (which has to
be a *lot* more than what the price is with two minutes on the
clock), stick it in the autobidder about 20 seconds to go, and sit
back. In 25 seconds refresh the screen, and see what you get.
The logic is that you (and everyone else) cant get two bids in in an
effective time, so make the last one count, and make it big enough
that the incremental bidders cant get another shout in.

Didnt even know sniping existed. Pah. Wheres the fun in not
getting up at 4:17am? Wheres the did-I didnt-I? The instant "gosh,
I sould have gone the extra <whatever>".
