RE: [OT] Ebay Sniping software
Sniping systems basically watch for an auction ending, and submit bids
very rapidly in the closing stages. The user enters a maximum bid, and
adopts smug winner pose :D
Basically, as there's no human, the sniper system can refresh and reload
the auction page very rapidly - they also keep the price depressed as
people wait till the last few seconds rather than seeing the price
gradually creep up as people try to outbid each other.
It's an issue of some debate on ebay AIUI - sniping was originally a
banning offense, but it's harder to prove, so ebay turns a blind eye to
it. Sellers dislike it, as it almost always means that items go for a
pittance, as interested parties don't show any interest till the end,
the majority of buyers who don't use sniping software dislike it for the
"unfair" element.
I have seen some suggestions that Sniping systems and the dreaded matrix
info sales are two of the key factors that have led to a decrease in
genuine, interesting items on ebay of late - any regular user will have
noticed a decline in the number of "real" items for sale..
Hey, you pays your money, and takes your choice.
I.
