Re: Router & WAP in one - good idea or bad?

Hiya Mark,
Go for it! I have a vigor 2200we (its the cable equivalent) and it works
for me. Its stuck upstairs in the middle of the house and range doesn't
seem to be a problem (not that I live in a big house).

As a test, Ive sat in the car in front of the garage with an iPaq
connected over WiFi to the internet with the audio plugged into one of
those tape cassette converter thingys into the cars radios tape player
listening to our local radio station broadcasting over the internet and
it worked fine! (erm - this was a 'proof of concept' thing here :))

I was a bit dubious of getting an 'all in one' box but its a case of
'you just plug it in and it works' type thing. Never had any trouble
with it (ok once when I messed up a firmware update).

Security is handled by 128bit wep with allowed mac addresses and no ssid
broadcasting which, once its set up no worries. The newer vigor range
now do 11g and also allow you to do vpn's over wifi for even stronger
security.

As a thought for having separate boxes - the main reason I can think of,
is if you want to share out your broadband with other users. Then its a
case of a separate access point and something like 'nocat'
http://nocat.net/ (iirc) sat on a spare
box to let the rest of the world
through :)

Take a look at the vigor range at www.seg.co.uk - theres some nice new
ones being release :)

Have Fun
Wayne.
