If you want something to interface with a micro at a low level and know a
bit of C then the offerings from Fred Eady at EDTP in the US are well worth
a look. Check out www.edtp.com - his electronics are far better than his
web construction....(my opinion) look down the page.....for the products of
interest.

I notice he now has a book published on the subject of Ethernet enabling
small embedded stuff - looks quite good.

His code implements the interface driver and includes probably all of the
ICMP/IP/TCP/UDP functionality you would require for a typical HA
application. Responds to ping on first compile! His code also has a working
TELNET implementation.

He has some complete boards which would cover most needs...

I do not know how this compares with some of the other solutions discussed
but the price seems good when you consider the code is pretty well
developed.
