[OT] VPN help

On a machine with a VPN client running, I have two IP addresses - the local
LAN IP and the
VPN IP. If I ping the VPN IP of my machine, I would hope that the thing
would be smart
enough to realise that this is actually a local machine and route it
through the loopback
device. No such luck - the packets go to the VPN server in the US :-( just
so that they
can send them back to me again.

So if I ping myself, it takes 200ms - the time it takes for a packet to go
across the pond
*4* times. That's because the request and response both do a full round
trip.

The VPN client software is from Cisco.

Does anybody know if it's possible to avoid these round trips when trying
to get to the
local machine via the VPN IP address?

It's a bit OT, so replies off list please.

Thanks,
Paul
