Re: [OT] Buildng a concrete base
Oooh. AND by selecting self assembly you justify the tool spend - nice

Thanks Tim - useful stuff.
I'm going for a 44mm log cabin - approx =A32700 for a 4m x 4m building wi=
th double glazed double door and windows (delivered - but self assembly).
I am planning on full Cat5 and alarm cabling etc - so no doubt I will be =
posting a few pics when the project gets going :) Can't wait to get it up
s=
o I can buy all the lovely woodworking kit I've now decided on (saw table,
=
thicknesser/planer, bench, pillar drill, router etc etc)

Yes, I dug it out to about a spade's depth, put the shuttering (with the =
level set to a few inches above ground level). Once the shuttering was in
=
I barrowed in the hardcore (=A365 for 2 cubic Metres - delivered -
expensiv=
e, but it was top stuff!). To make judging the hardcore level easier I
kno=
cked some pegs level with the top of the shutterboard - I only needed
3-4" =
of concrete, so it was pretty easy to judge. I used the short edge of a
8'=
plank as a tamp and got a bit of exercise rather than hire a compactor. I=
did buy a 9" Angle grinder from screwfix that I haven't used as yet
(but i=
t was only =A320!!) but I am going to lay a 4x2slab "Patio-ette"
at the fro=
nt of the shed, so I might get to knock the shine off it then : )
Add 2M armoured cable (Kindly donated via UKHA!) an old consumer unit and=
a couple of plugs/sockets/lights and a bucket of Cuprinol Rollable and hey=
presto we are finished....
The making-good of the front lawn (with swmbo) is a project only in its i=
nfancy : (
Good luck.
BTW the shed was made-to-measure (7'6" x 10') with a 4' double door
=A349=
5 delivered and erected. If we had opted for a proper garden building I
wou=
ld have gone with Warwick Buildings - a much more substantial edifice.
Let=
us know how you get on.=20=20

Good stuff - see what you mean about the tyre marks (holes!).
Did you put down a hardcore layer (can you buy in hardcore?)

I went to the timber centre and got tannalised gravel board (like for a=
t
the foot of a featheredge fence) about 6 x 3/4 but they do it in nice
long lengths and they cut it to length for me - I used 2x1 for the pegs=
.
I had planned to pour over a fence, but decided it was better to take
down the panel - which was great as it allowed easy access and really
only took 10 minutes to get down and put back.=20
Here are some pics - I haven't got the required skill to put up a
gallery, so here goes...

Thanks Mark/Tim.
Tim - I'm not sure where to get the shuttering - where did you get
yours
and what type was it?
My base is very close to my drive luckily although there is a 8ft
fence
in the way - how high can they pour from?

I just built a 10x8 base for the same purpose. I found useful info o=
n
www.ablemix.co.uk and a few of the other national concrete suppliers.
In the end when it came to pouring the base I went with a local
supplier
who promised smaller lorries for easier access. This was true and
although 7.5 tonnes isn't really a small truck it did allow for easie=
r
access. I also took a lot of care when I made the shuttering to
ensure
it was square and level and screwed the gravel boards to posts driven
in
- this allowed easy levelling and made the whole thing rigid prior to
the concrete pour. The concrete pour was a cakewalk.
There was a tiny mishap as the bloke driving the truck parked it on
the
lawn (all 6 wheels) after some pretty heavy rain and was then amazed
that it was stuck - Need less to say it made a mess of te hplace I
will
try and dig out a picture of the whole "amusing" incident.
Good luck,
Tim.=20
