Could you not loose the HDD altogether and boot from the network to save
space?

Why can't you just remove the metal housing that holds the mobo and all
other bits.

I have not looked at the actual mobo details ... but then you could
spread
the items such as PSU, Hard disk etc.therefore reduce the depth a bit ..
or
at least spread the items out so the volume is not so large.

Therefore you could mount all the items to a customised housing.
