Thanks to all who replied. Having done a fair bit more research, it
would appear that "deafness" is nothing like as simple as I'd
believed. It turns out to be a whole range of different conditions
lumped together.
Conn Evans were incredibly helpful on the phone, but strongly
recommended that I _didn't_ buy anything off the catalogue from them
without trying them out. They were also able to recommend a shop run
by the local deaf trust (in our case, the Sussex one.)
Hence we took the mother-in-law on a shopping trip. The shop is run b
volunteers, and had a large range of possible models for her to try...
some that used loud speakerphones, some that had active amplifiers in
the headset, some that had induction loops to control her hearing aid
directly.
In the end, she went for a BT phone, but NOT the converse range, which
was completely useless for her.
Two weeks on, and her life is transformed. She had not been able to
use the phone for about 6 months, but is now able to converse again.
A real eye opener, and thanks to Patrick for recommending a
specialists who could really help.
Regards,
Mark
