Multi Room Audio with PC

I'm sure I remember reading something like this a while ago........

I'd like to use a PC to serve MP3 to multiple zones in my house.

Does any one know if its possible to do this using either;

1) Multiple sound cards in one machine
2) 5.1 surround sound PCI cards and split the speaker outputs across
multiple zones.

What software/drivers etc are there out there to do this ?
Also how does the control aspect work ?
