Yup every plasma box I have ever seen says 'keep upright' the weight of the
unit or gravity will cause the glass to crack if you lay it
down...'apparently' ??

I'd be wary about rotating a plasma downwards - the screen is a large sheet
of fairly thin glass which is unsupported in the middle ... Too much
opportunity for the screen to break under its own weight for my liking.
