Given that the bit rate is less than half, that's understandable ;)

Have you tried lower mp3 rates using LAME and using some of the other
encoding options - --r3mix, --alt-preset-extreme etc?

I prefer wma personally, but the only format with the flexibility I need
is mp3 - which I found *after* i'd ripped a shed load of albums.
I suspect you may find the same with AAC.....

Solution? Re-rip everything lossless, so I should never have to do it
again, then batch convert to whatever format I want - in this case, mp3.
IF I decide to switch formats again, I just batch convert the lossess
files and away I go.....

the slimserver can convert at the server and steam

I presume you mean stream ;)
Yes, but you are converting from one lossy format to another so it will
sound even worse than before.....

audiotron does not, showcenter does not, slimp does not (natively), ipaq
does not, my P900 phone does not..... all of them, however, DO support
MP3.

Whilst this does not actually answer your question, it may change your
mind.....

cheers,

T.
