One of your key linux requirements therefore is a web mail server
thing.

There are two approaches you can solve this problem with, one is to
put together a collection of freely available applications, the
other is to buy something that works out of the box. I started with
the freely available stuff which I made work mostly, then got
annoyed and payed someone to make it all work, and then decided it
was still too much trouble and not really good enough.

Then I evaluated, and then paid for Communigate Pro, see
www.stalker.com. T'is not free, but you can evaluate it
permanently, subject to outgoing mail having a advert line inserted.

No affiliation other than as a very happy user.

Just a related thought, and this applies to anyone with a home mail
server on the end of a broadband link - make sure you set the
mailserver to route outgoing mail to your ISPs outgoing mail host;
an increasing number of mail servers are now configured to not
accept mail directly from broadband or dial-up lines, as a huge
amount of spam comes from these sources, due to virus and trojan
ridden Windows PCs at the end of these ADSL lines.
