ah sorry, I didn't read the post properly :-)

There is some software that does what he wants by comparing an image
of the space to the current image and reporting changes. I can't for
the life of me remember what it's called though. I don't think it was
"motion"

Might be worth jumping on their IRC channel as I'm sure they'll know
what it was.

I don't know of any off the shelf products, but you could use
something as simple as a beam break?
