My approach is to score the area I want with something pointy, then
have at anything inside that area with a crappy soldering iron,
reserved entirely for this purpose. This is an extremely hazardous,
smelly, molten-plastic-dripping-on-your-leggy experience,
traditionally accomplished by much swearing. Once I'm close to the
desired outline, I file down to it using a selection of files, needle
files, etc.

You can get quite good results with this approach, it just takes a
very long time and makes you quite annoyed ;)
