Standard IrDA modules as found in most laptops use 875nm wavelength
for communication. The average consumer remote uses 940nm also there
is a requirement for a different receiver section inside the module
itself, as well a much higher power emitter LED to get the range.

I am not sure from your post whether you are entertaining the idea of
making something from scratch or looking for a purchaseable solution.

If you are going down the build something yourself route take a look
at the following transceivers.

http://www.agilent.com/view/ir

and then search for HSDL-3002 and HSDL-3003 both of these
transceivers are RC capable including learning functions on the HSDL-
3003.

You would need an IC like the HSDL-7001 to allow connection to a
standard RS232 port for the IrDa functionality and an additional
interface cirucuit for the consumer IR to RS232.Things like the
paralax research IrDA dongle contain an Ir Endec like the HSDL-7001
and standard IrDa module like the HSDL-3201

The software would be the biggest issue as you would need to gain
access to a protocol stack ported to windows OS and additional PC
software that would support this, I am not sure what is required here
as I only deal with these products for embeded systems such as
cellphones, and the stacks we sell are not exactly cheap (100's of K$)

If you haven't already realised I work for this company so do have a
vested interest in recommending these products however as the TV
commercial says other listings magazines are available.

If you have any questions on IR mail me offlist.

cheers

Paul
