Dont think planning is needed where it's not joined to the house...not
sure if permissable development %age applies tho - but thats' normally
massively more than any shed !

My Dad always wanted to do this - his idea was to get hold of an old
cargo container (like they use to transport stuff on P&O cargo ships
etc) and sink this into the ground - it would be structurally sound
and only requires plasterboarding inside.

The Idea to get down to it was to use a dog-leg shape staircase or
even a spiral one with an 'entry hut' over the top to make it
weaterproof.

Not sure on the planning aspect thought... apparently its a
removable structure (like a shed) so plannig permission is not
needed?
