I had to do something similar with a Zip disk for my Dad recently
(disk contained scanned images of my youngest brother with my late
mum - originals had been destroyed).

Given the importance of the photos I'd recommend getting a
professional to do it but of course that may cost a fair bit.

If you want to try yourself this is what I'd recommend... (as I've
never done this with a CF Card your milage may vary)

Preserve the original card by making a duplicate copy of it
- Use a CF reader that presents the card as a drive
- Create an image of the card (think I used WinImage
http://www.winimage.com/winimage.htm)
- Duplicate this image onto another CF card of the same size, might
also be worth using an identical card brand etc.)

Use undelete software on the duplicate CF card
- I used O&O UnErase (http://www.oo-
software.com/en/products/ooue/index.html), it managed to recover
several deleted directories, but by using a copy of the card you can
experiment with different software.

Hope it works out.

Andy
