I don't think so. It's a Technics SC-HD350 micro system, and I've never
actually had a look at it yet, but the guy that owns it has been told he
needs a pre-amp.

Have a look at the B-Tech site (http://www.b-tech-int.com/welcome.html)
- click on "audio control boxes". There doesn't seem to be much
difference between the BT26 and BT926 boxes. Am I right in thinking that
both of them take a 3.5mm jack from a turntable giving line level over
twin phonos to the aux/line level in on the amp? And is the connection
between the turntable and pre-amp a 3.5mm stereo jack at both ends?

Can you tell I'm just young enough to have missed the whole LP turntable
thing?

I'm assuming the amp doesn't have a phono input?
