And if you really cant, go microwave. The car security alarm
microwave detectors (CPC, Maplin etc) work through walls, and have a
sensitivity control to adjust range. Place aluminium plate behind
the module overlapping the unit by a few inches each side so it only
triggers outside, not inside :-)
The one I had was an open collector output, so was easy to interface.
