Re: [OT] Noise cancelling headphones

I've got a pair of Sony MDR-NC5s also.
My flatmate purchased them for me, as a birthday pressie, from the
duty free trolley on a flight from Mexico City to London. He has a
pair of the BOSE 'phones (the older type with the seperate amplifier
box.
The Sonys are not as good as the Bose - The Bose 'phones are quite
large, totally enclose the ears, and are easier to wear for long
journeys. Also they seem to work better (unsurprisingly). However
the Sony 'phones are a LOT cheaper, smaller, and fold up into a
small-ish pouch (14cm x 17cm).
They DO work: The quality of the sound for the in-flight
entertainment is much better than on the standard phones. The
suppression of external noise is amazing, especially the continuous
drone you get in a plane. and as Adrian pointed out, even if you
don't want to listen to anything, just put them on, turn them on,
and don't plug them in - you will feel much less tired and stressed
at the end of the flight.

My flatmate and I often wear them at home when we are both in
our "office" working on the pcs.

IMHO it's worth getting a pair if you only use them for just one
long haul flight!

James
